I want to share with you a cool tool I use to maintain my FICO score and keep tabs on it.

But I also want to tell you what most folks do NOT understand.

And that is that a high FICO score doesn't mean anything today.

In the old days before 2009, you could get credit with nothing but a high FICO score. But today, you have to have a low debt ratio also.

That means you should not be owing more than 40% of the total credit line on any one credit card. And your total credit granted to you that shows up on your credit report shouldn't be out of line with your total income.

What should you do if you owe a lot?

How long have you owed it? If it's been for years, and you've never paid it off, then you need to get rid of it altogether.

Or, if it's so large an amount that realistically you'll never pay it back, you need to get rid of it.

High FICO scores are for people who can pay their debts off because they're making good money and have a good amount of savings. If you do not make a lot of money and could not pay off your debts anytime soon, then you will want to look at debt settlement.
